我花了整整三个月,试了五六种不同的教学方法,最后才总结出这套让初中生快速理解定语从句,特别是which和that区别的最有效方法。今天就跟大家分享一下我的心得,希望能帮到正在为这个语法点头疼的老师和同学们。
一、定语从句到底是什么? ??
刚开始教定语从句的时候,我发现很多学生一听到“从句”两个字就头大。其实说白了,定语从句就是用一个完整的句子来修饰名词或代词,相当于一个“超级形容词”。
比如“I like the book”这个简单句,想说明是哪本书,可以加上“which you gave me”,变成“I like the book which you gave me”。这里的“which you gave me”就是定语从句,修饰前面的名词“book”。
核心概念:
先行词:被定语从句修饰的那个词(比如上面例句中的“book”)
关系词:引导定语从句的词(比如which, that, who等)
定语从句的位置:永远跟在先行词后面
理解了这三点,定语从句的基本结构就清楚了。
二、关系代词which和that的区别到底是什么?
这是学生问得最多的问题,也是我最初教学时最头疼的地方。经过反复试验,我找到了一个特别简单的区分方法:
which和that在指物时常常可以互换,比如“This is the book which/that I like”都是对的。但有些情况下只能用that,不能用which:
先行词是不定代词时,如anything, everything, nothing, all等:
“Is there anything that I can do for you?”(这里不能用which)
先行词被序数词或形容词最高级修饰时:
“The first thing that we should do is to get some food.”(first是序数词)
“This is the most interesting book that I have ever read.”(most interesting是最高级)
先行词被the only, the very, the same等词修饰时:
“This is the only thing that I can find.”
先行词既有人又有物时:
“The writer and his novel that you talked about are famous.”
主句是which开头的疑问句时:
“Which is the car that killed the boy?”
反过来,在非限制性定语从句(就是有逗号隔开的定语从句)中,只能用which,不能用that:
“That necklace, which you gave me, was lost yesterday.”(这个逗号很关键!)
三、怎么判断用关系代词还是关系副词?
另一个学生容易混淆的点是when/where/why和which/that的选择。其实判断标准很简单:看定语从句中缺什么成分。
如果从句缺主语或宾语,用关系代词(which/that):
“I’ll never forget the days which we spent together.”(spent后面缺宾语)
如果从句缺时间、地点或原因状语,用关系副词(when/where/why):
“I’ll never forget the days when we worked together.”(work不缺主语或宾语,缺时间状语)
可以用“介词+which”来理解关系副词:
when = at/in/on/during + which
where = in/at/on + which
why = for + which
比如“This is the factory where (=in which) I work.”
四、我的教学小技巧:造句三步法 ??
为了让学生真正掌握定语从句,我创建了一个简单的三步造句法:
写两个简单句,找到共同指代的事物或人:
“I like the book. You gave me the book yesterday.”
将第二个句子的共同部分替换为关系词,并移到句首:
“I like the book. which you gave me yesterday.”
将两个句子合并:
“I like the book which you gave me yesterday.”
这个方法特别适合初学者,通过大量练习,学生慢慢就能内化定语从句的构成规则。
五、定语从句教学要避免的两个坑
根据我的经验,教学中要特别注意这两点:
1. 不要一开始就讲太多例外情况
先让学生掌握基本规则,建立信心,再慢慢补充特殊用法。否则学生会觉得太复杂而放弃。
2. 不要只讲不练
定语从句需要大量实际运用才能掌握。我通常会设计一些情境对话或游戏,让学生在真实语境中自然使用定语从句。
说实话,教定语从句最大的成就感来自于看到学生从困惑到理解的眼神变化。语法不是死记硬背的东西,而是有规律可循的。只要方法得当,每个学生都能掌握定语从句的用法。
我的个人观点是,与其纠结于which和that的细微差别,不如先让学生大胆地用起来。在基本规则掌握后,再逐步纠正细节错误。语言是用来沟通的工具,能够正确表达意思就是成功的第一步。
